Relief

  • Wait until pain subsides (pain typically doesn’t last longer than 5 minutes), which will happen as the body adjusts to the temperature change.

Prevention

  • Eat frosty or icy food or beverages (e.g. ice pops, ice cream, icy drinks like milkshakes) slowly – take by sips or take little bites. Avoid taking icy drinks in one gulp.
  • Keep the cold food or beverage away from the roof of the mouth or back of the palate.
